On September 18, 2025, Steppingstone School hosted our first Parent Support Forum of the year, featuring guest speaker Kristin Cotts, LPC from the Center for Identity Potential in Huntington Woods.

Kristin, recently promoted to Director of Training and Education at the Center, led an insightful session on one of the most pressing questions for parents and educators of gifted children: How do we help them build grit?

Drawing from her extensive professional expertise and personal journey as a parent of a gifted teenager with learning disabilities, Kristin emphasized that grit in gifted children cannot be understood through traditional definitions of perseverance — it requires a lens of complexity and asynchronous development.

Rethinking Giftedness

Most of us were taught to think of giftedness as “advanced development.” Kristin challenged this view, reminding us that giftedness is really asynchronous development — an uneven profile where a child can be years ahead in one area, average in another, and behind in yet another.

As intelligence increases, so does the likelihood of executive dysfunction. In other words, “intelligence does not equal executive function.” A child who excels in math might still struggle to organize their backpack, focus on chores, or follow multi-step instructions.

This perspective reframes the question from “Why isn’t he trying harder?” to “What skills are still developing, and how can we support them?”

Grit is Not One-Size-Fits-All

Kristin emphasized that grit is not a fixed trait. A child may show tremendous perseverance in one setting and resist another. For example, one case study highlighted a boy who finished last in his first cross-country races — but never stopped running, even in grueling heat. His determination was undeniable, even if motivation wavered at the next practice.

This shows that grit manifests in complex, uneven ways, just like giftedness itself.

Why Kids Don't "Stick With Things"

Parents often worry when their child gives up on an activity. Kristin reframed this as a skill-building issue, not a character flaw. The ability to practice is not innate — it must be taught through supervised, repetitive action.

She compared it to teaching a child to take out the garbage: you don’t just say “do it once” and expect mastery. Instead, you walk them through it step by step, day after day, until it becomes automatic.

In many cases, a child’s “failure” to persist simply reflects that they haven’t yet developed the skill of practice — not laziness or defiance.

The Role of Motivation and the Brain

A particularly striking takeaway was the role of interest and meaning in activating the brain’s executive functions.

This means that a child may excel in reading books they love, while resisting others, or perform brilliantly in music but struggle in chores. Their brain literally allocates resources differently depending on what feels meaningful.

The Center for Identity Potential’s philosophy is that interventions must be deeply individualized. Public schools often rely on standardized approaches, but gifted children require tailored support based on comprehensive evaluations of executive function, motivation, and context.

As Kristin highlighted, the question is not whether a child has grit, but how their grit emerges — and what supports will help them apply it across contexts.

Lessons for Parents & Educators

Kristin acknowledged that conversations about grit can stir anxiety, sadness, or worry in parents. But she offered a hopeful reminder: grit grows through a process of self-discovery, trial and error, and compassionate guidance.

Her own son’s journey — from struggling with auditory processing to finding his place on the cross-country team — illustrates that grit does not always look like winning. Sometimes, it looks like finishing last but never giving up, and in doing so, inspiring others.

A Journey into Teaching: Dr. Morse’s Reflections from the Upper Elementary Classroom

The Upper Elementary class started on December 17, 2024, when its first student, Francis Hyun, began attending Steppingstone as a 4th grade student. Until then, I had been entertaining myself with restoring Kiyo’s 1978 Mercedes 450 SL, improving my big 3D printer, building a 6D robotic arm, chopping weeds, mowing the lawn, and teaching at the SMART Center. But, when the opportunity arose to teach again, I took advantage of it because I had never taught just one student.

The Power of One-on-One Mentorship

This experience taught me a lot. The research on teaching says that the best way to teach a student is as a mentor – information flows in both directions. The student learns subject material from the teacher, and the teacher learns about the learning style, strengths, and weaknesses of the student, and indeed, we both learned from each other. Being able to teach one-on-one was an eye-opening experience. As this educational relationship progressed, I wondered if this could be expanded to more students.

Expanding the Classroom with New Perspectives

I got to test this idea when Declan Kemp, a 3rd grader, arrived on April 9th, 2025. He was a very different student with a different approach to problem-solving. Again, he had much to teach me, and I had much to teach him. Mentoring two very different learners showed me that I could adjust my style to this classroom environment.

Together, we built a classroom culture rooted in mutual respect, discovery, and adaptability. I now feel excited by the possibility of welcoming even more learners into this dynamic environment.

Hands-On Learning and Student Leadership

Our classroom had the oldest students in the school this year and, as such, led the school in activities like the Rouge River Testing, Salmon in the Classroom, and, most exciting, the SLIME experience (Sea Lampreys in Michigan Education). They worked to monitor the salmon tank for nitrogen by-products (ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate), kept the salmon fed, managed the baby tortoise, fed the adult tortoises, and cared for the saltwater fish.

Through these activities, my students didn’t just learn science – they lived it. They also took their first steps in becoming mentors themselves, learning how to guide others as they had been guided.

A Community That Teaches Everyone

If there’s one thing I’ve come to appreciate most about Steppingstone, it’s that this is far more than a school. It is a living, evolving community that supports growth – not only for its students but also for its teachers.

In my tie with Francis and Declan, I’ve learned that even after decades of working in science, research and education, there is still so much to be discovered – especially from the minds of young, gifted students.

Teaching at Steppingstone has been a privilege. I may have started this year thinking I’d be passing on knowledge, but I ended it deeply grateful for everything I learned from the best teachers of all: the kids.

On Wednesday, February 5th, we held our second Parent Support Forum on the topic of Reflective Parenting with guest speaker Dr. Ira Glovinsky. Dr. Glovinsky has a deep-rooted connection to Steppingstone School, as he was one of the original consultants and IQ evaluators of gifted students from our founding in 1981. What makes him uniquely qualified in the field of child psychology is his years of classroom teaching experience before transitioning to psychology—a rare combination that allows him to bridge educational and psychological insights seamlessly.

Today, Dr. Glovinsky is a nationally respected speaker, consultant, and teacher trainer, working with Oakland County Family Services in Pre-School and Early Childhood programs. He also serves as an Associate Adjunct Professor for Early Childhood and Art Education at Brooklyn College in New York.

What Is Reflective Parenting?

Reflective Parenting is an approach that encourages parents to pause, reflect, and respond thoughtfully, rather than react impulsively.
