									<p class="MsoNormal">On <b>September 18, 2025</b>, Steppingstone School hosted our <b>first Parent Support Forum of the year</b>, featuring guest speaker <b>Kristin Cotts, LPC</b> from the Center for Identity Potential in Huntington Woods.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Kristin, recently promoted to Director of Training and Education at the Center, led an insightful session on one of the most pressing questions for parents and educators of gifted children: <i>How do we help them build grit?</i></p><p class="MsoNormal">Drawing from her extensive professional expertise and personal journey as a parent of a gifted teenager with learning disabilities, Kristin emphasized that grit in gifted children cannot be understood through traditional definitions of perseverance — it requires a lens of <b>complexity and asynchronous development</b>.</p>								</div>

									<p class="MsoNormal">Most of us were taught to think of giftedness as “advanced development.” Kristin challenged this view, reminding us that giftedness is really <b>asynchronous development</b> — an uneven profile where a child can be years ahead in one area, average in another, and behind in yet another.</p><p class="MsoNormal">As intelligence increases, so does the likelihood of <b>executive dysfunction</b>. In other words, “intelligence does not equal executive function.” A child who excels in math might still struggle to organize their backpack, focus on chores, or follow multi-step instructions.</p><p class="MsoNormal">This perspective reframes the question from <i>“Why isn’t he trying harder?”</i> to <i>“What skills are still developing, and how can we support them?”</i></p>								</div>

For example, one case study highlighted a boy who finished last in his first cross-country races — but never stopped running, even in grueling heat. His determination was undeniable, even if motivation wavered at the next practice.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><i>“But can we say this kid doesn’t have grit? 									<p class="MsoNormal">Parents often worry when their child gives up on an activity. Kristin reframed this as a <b>skill-building issue</b>, not a character flaw. The ability to practice is not innate — it must be <b>taught through supervised, repetitive action</b>.</p><p class="MsoNormal">She compared it to teaching a child to take out the garbage: you don’t just say “do it once” and expect mastery. Instead, you walk them through it step by step, day after day, until it becomes automatic.</p><p class="MsoNormal">In many cases, a child’s “failure” to persist simply reflects that they haven’t yet developed the skill of practice — not laziness or defiance.</p>								</div>

Public schools often rely on standardized approaches, but gifted children require tailored support based on comprehensive evaluations of executive function, motivation, and context.</p><p class="MsoNormal">As Kristin highlighted, the question is not whether a child <i>has grit</i>, but how their grit emerges — and what supports will help them apply it across contexts.</p>								</div>

									<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Upper Elementary class started on December 17, 2024, when its first student, Francis Hyun, began attending Steppingstone as a 4th grade student. Until then, I had been entertaining myself with restoring Kiyo’s 1978 Mercedes 450 SL, improving my big 3D printer, building a 6D robotic arm, chopping weeds, mowing the lawn, and teaching at the SMART Center. But, when the opportunity arose to teach again, I took advantage of it because I had never taught just one student.</span></p>								</div>

									<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This experience taught me a lot.  The research on teaching says that the best way to teach a student is as a mentor – information flows in both directions.  The student learns subject material from the teacher, and the teacher learns about the learning style, strengths, and weaknesses of the student, and indeed, we both learned from each other.  Being able to teach one-on-one was an eye-opening experience.  As this educational relationship progressed, I wondered if this could be expanded to more students.</span></p>								</div>

									<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I got to test this idea when Declan Kemp, a 3</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">rd</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> grader, arrived on April 9</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">th</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">, 2025.  He was a very different student with a different approach to problem-solving.  Again, he had much to teach me, and I had much to teach him.  Mentoring two very different learners showed me that I could adjust my style to this classroom environment. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Together, we built a classroom culture rooted in mutual respect, discovery, and adaptability. I now feel excited by the possibility of welcoming even more learners into this dynamic environment.</span></p>								</div>

									<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Our classroom had the oldest students in the school this year and, as such, led the school in activities like the Rouge River Testing, Salmon in the Classroom, and, most exciting, the SLIME experience (Sea Lampreys in Michigan Education).  They worked to monitor the salmon tank for nitrogen by-products (ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate), kept the salmon fed, managed the baby tortoise, fed the adult tortoises, and cared for the saltwater fish. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Through these activities, my students didn’t just learn science – they lived it. They also took their first steps in becoming mentors themselves, learning how to guide others as they had been guided.</span></p>								</div>

Dr. Glovinsky has a deep-rooted connection to Steppingstone School, as he was one of the </span><b>original consultants and IQ evaluators</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of gifted students from our founding in 1981. What makes him uniquely qualified in the field of child psychology is his </span><b>years of classroom teaching experience</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> before transitioning to psychology—a rare combination that allows him to bridge educational and psychological insights seamlessly.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Today, Dr. Glovinsky is a </span><b>nationally respected speaker, consultant, and teacher trainer</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">, working with </span><b>Oakland County Family Services</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in Pre-School and Early Childhood programs.
