The Steppingstone MAgnetic Resonance Training (SMART)
Center’s purpose is to bring a research-based science
experience to young, science-oriented students in order
to meet our mission of "Exciting the next generation
of scientists." It offers middle school, high school, and
undergraduate college students the opportunity to engage
in research experiences that are usually only available to
college graduate students.
Students will learn how to design experiments while
utilizing a $250,000 electron para-magnetic resonance (EPR)
spectrometer, developing a hypothesis to test, designing an
experimental protocol to test their hypothesis, learning to
collect and analyze data and forming valid conclusions.
There are two components to the program. The first are these
training sessions, where students will:
- Learn to use the instruments
- Learn what kind of information they can get from the instruments
- Learn to design experiments which will make use of the instrumentation and data collection & analysis software
Read the SMART Center Brochure and see the
SMART Center website for more information.
